Some credit Virginia Blakelock with beginning the renaissance of beadwork on the West Coast. She did publish the first “modern” book on beadwork, “Those Bad Bad Beads”, in the late 80s and she and her partner Carol Perrenoud introduced many people to the art and craft of beading, through teaching for quilting and weaving guilds, at nationwide conferences like Surface Design and Convergence, and at prestigious craft schools such as Penland and Arrowmont. Virginia and Carol were notorious for showing up at their gigs in their black 6-door limousine (loaded to the gills with beads, because back then bead stores weren’t commonplace). Virginia was the first independent person to have pressed glass beads made for her in the Czech Republic, resurrecting old shapes. Soon the big players like Shipwreck followed suit, and we witnessed the rebirth of the Czech glass bead industry. As the passion for beads wanes in the mainstream, Virginia’s shows no sign of abating. Free now to live full time as an artist, she is following her passion wherever it leads. She holds a B.F.A. from Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio, with a major in painting. Her beadwork is featured in many books on bead artists, including the second edition of The History of Beads.

CLIFF SWAIN-SALOMON WORKSHOPS

WILD AT HEART

June 10, 2023 Class

via Zoom

9:00am – 3:00pm (with lunch break)

Designed in honor of Cliff’s mother—an adventuresome character who runs circles around people even half her age—this wild prairie rose pendant necklace reflects her love, its resilience, and its infiniteness. Five heart-shaped petals adorn a bezeled Swarovski chaton, surrounded by softly striated leaves. To complete the necklace, the pendant attaches to a beaded rope of Russian Snake Chain studded with 2mm Swarovski Pearls. Please note this project uses a large quantity of size 15° beads so good lighting and/or magnification might be needed by some people.

Stitches used: peyote, RAW, brick, Russian snake chain, modified St. Petersburg, and various other stitches

Prerequisites: RAW, peyote, brick (all other necessary stitches will be taught in class)

Skill Level- Advanced

Time in a bottle

June 11, 2023 Class

via Zoom

9:00 am – 3:00pm (with lunch break)

There is nothing more precious than the gift of time and spending it with those we love. I was inspired by the lyrics of the Jim Croce song , “If I could make days last forever If words could make wishes come true I'd save every day like a treasure, and then...Again, I would spend them with you.” The soft curves of this piece look like an hourglass-shaped bottle. This necklace is a nod to the Art Nouveau period and sparkles like crazy! The piece is made to look like bead embroidery even though it is all woven using a blend of CRAW, PRAW, RAW, and Peyote. The focal is a 16mm Swarovski Vision Stone which is surrounded by rhodium plated Preciosa cupchain. In addition there are 13 Swarovski crystals and 77 Swarovski pearls, a shimmer 8mm Swarovski chaton, plus a platinum plated/crystal Claspgarten clasp.

Stitches used: CRAW, PRAW, RAW, Peyote, Albion

Prerequisites: CRAW, RAW, Peyote Skill level: strong intermediate/advanced

Class Fee: members: $65.00

Non-members: $95.00

Kits Required $118.00

Cliff’s beadwork has earned him several awards— he was the grand prize winner of Bead Dreams in 2018, where he was chosen for the People’s Choice Award, and he also received the Facet Jewelry Reader’s Choice Award in July 2019 and Judge’s Award in November 2019. His work has also been featured in ad campaigns and in a blog article for The Museum of Beadwork in Portland, Maine and Toho Beads in partnership with Bobby Beads & Starman. Toho Beads invited him to be a featured artist for their 2019 and 2020 Toho Bead Challenges. He is also a permanent ambassador for the Beadworker’s Guild and International Beading Week who featured him in their January 2022 Journal, as well as the international tutor for Melbourne, Australia for 2021.  Cliff teaches beadweaving at various stores, for bead societies, and for retreats internationally. Before becoming a full-time artist/teacher, Cliff had worked as an instructor for a college of natural medicine, as a chef, and had held a private holistic medicine practice. EDGAR LOPES BIO

Born and raised in the Dominican Republic, Edgar started in the beading world in 2010, however he began experimenting with different jewelry and accessories techniques in 2002. Edgar Lopez said: “Since I can remember I was always interested in art, design and building all sorts of things with my hands, these are skills that I inherited from my paternal grandmother, who was always a very creative person. Today I can bring all these qualities to creating pieces I love and fill me with excitement.

" After studying architecture, he started looking for activities that he could do as a hobby, until he realized that he liked creating jewelry. He began to study jewelry design and working in the fashion world for different designers. He has participated in several contests as a contestant and as a juror, and his creations have been published in multiple magazines and books in the United States, Latin America and Europe.

“Creating is my passion. As an architect and jewelry designer, I learned to mix the best of both worlds, mixing shapes and textures that I can see in nature or buildings, and as a Caribbean I like color and to be risky with their combinations.”

In 2019 he moved to NY and since then he has continued developing his work as a designer and as a teacher, "teaching others how to make my designs is one of the things that fill me most with satisfaction".

He is currently developing new projects that combine several of the things he likes the most: fashion, design, the beads and art.

CLIFF SWAIN-SALOMON WORKSHOPS

Lotus 2-1 Necklace/Cocktail Ring

Saturday May 22 9:30am to 3:00pm

IMG_4753 2.jpeg

Level: Advanced
Prerequisites- CRAW, Flat and Tubular Peyote, Chenille (will be taught in class)

Kit cost: $125

This beautiful lotus is the embodiment of “grace blooming” to adorn you whether you wear it as a necklace or a ring or if you make two flowers to wear it as a ring/necklace set. In nature, the flower buds push up through murky and muddy water, and as the bud blooms, the core remains untainted despite the mucky environment in which it began its life. This is seen as an analogy for the human spirit and our experiences in this world—regardless of how difficult or challenging our lives are, nothing can taint the purity of the human spirit. That is why the lotus is viewed in many cultures as a symbol of purity and enlightenment.

In Hinduism, it is believed that the spirit of the Sacred Lotus Flower is a part of each human being. In this tradition, it is a symbol of fertility, prosperity, beauty, divinity, and life.

This stunning 2-in-1 necklace/ring is constructed using various stitches, including a PRAW vine shaped band that encircles two Swarovski pearls. A beautiful chaton is bezeled and surrounded by sculptured petals. The neck lariat is accented with special snake-textured fire polished beads and Swarovski pearls and is constructed with chenille stitch and PRAW that allows you to attach the pendant in a couple different ways. Worn as a necklace or ring it definitely a showstopper and an amazing statement piece.

California Poppy Earrings/pendant

Sunday May 23 9:30am to 3:00pm

IMG_9682.jpeg

Level: Intermediate
Prerequites: peyote, herringbone, and RAW
Stitches used, peyote (flat even and odd count and tubular), herringbone, stitch-in-the-ditch, branch fringe, and RAW

Kit cost: $45 (enough for a pair of earrings and a matching pendant)

Growing up, Cliff’s favorite wildflower—growing right in his own backyard—was the California Poppy. He loved its structure, from the beautiful wedge shaped petals, to the perfectly circular receptacle at the base of the petals, to the frond shaped leaves and the long straight stalks. When Cliff and his husband David moved to California and David saw the flower for the first time, he too fell in love with it, not only for its structure, but also because it is orange—his favorite color. Because of their shared love of this delightful flower, the two of them set out to design their first collaborative pattern together. The combination of Matsuno and Miyuki beads give each petal its signature, subtle shapes and luscious glow. The flowers can be beaded to be more open or more bud-like, and the twisting stem adds a bit of artistic flair and grace to the overall piece.

Phalaenopsis Orchid Earrings/pendant

Friday May 21 9:30am to 3:00pm

SOLD OUT

IMG_2468.jpeg

Level: Ambitious Advanced

Prerequisite: Strong Peyote skills

Stitches used: 14 different stitches including 7 types of peyote, herringbone, PRAW, brick, square, stitch-in-the-ditch, branch fringe, and ladder stitch

Kit cost: $60 (if only getting the pattern and not buying the kit there is a $10 pattern printing cost which is worked into the kit cost normally as the pattern is 44 full color pages)

These orchids are definitely a statement piece and were made in honor of Cliff’s daughter, whose given birth middle name was Orchid, before adopting and gifting her a new name. In ancient Greece, orchids were a symbol of virility and fertility. Due to the flower’s symmetry, in China, they are considered “Lan Hua” or the epitome of human perfection. In Victorian England these flowers are considered symbols of love, which is why he had them as one of his wedding flowers. The Phalænopsis orchid has just over 60 varieties that grow naturally in the wild, which is a small number compared to the over 35,000 species of orchid varieties that naturally exist.

To pattern these beaded beauties, Cliff actually used one of his many orchid plants that he grows, dissecting one of the flowers to ensure it was anatomically correct and true to the original it is patterned after. For those who are proficient in peyote stitch, this pendant is a great exploration of how to shape flower petals using different peyote techniques. Each flower is made life-sized, true to scale and can be worn as a pendant or adapted to make a beautiful pair of earrings.

The Unspoken Behind the Scenes of Bead Embroidery

Internal construction,

Forming,

Reinforcing,

Preparing focals,

Fast tracking to greater learning: minimal beading in class/beading with the end in mind

Catherine Haedrich was introduced to the fun world of beading by a knitter-cross-pollinator friend who offered a lesson on flat and circular peyote in her home. She initially tried to pass on taking up another new hobby, claiming, “I have yarn beyond life expectancy”. She credits her early experiences with more advanced beaders for giving her insight into what was possible for the future. Her motto for why she beads is, “Woman cannot live on spreadsheets alone”. She is haunted by the fact she worked in Czech Republic three years but was not yet a beader, a fact she has tried to make up for over the years with many visits to Jablonec Nad Nisou. While her husband is supportive of her hobby he recently returned from a business trip and asked, “Did you miss me?” When she hesitated (he had only been gone two days), he mumbled in defeat, “If only I were a bead”. Indeed, if only we all were beads!

BubblY Set As shown: Bracelet flat, bracelet, Back of collar, Collar, Not shown: Earrings

This is a two day class.

Friday, October 30, 5:30pm to 8:30pm AND Monday November 2, 5:30pm to 8:30pm

Bubbly Series came into being while friends were making Siren of the Sea Neckpiece from Inspired Bead Embroidery, I too took inspiration. Octopus Collar started with an antique silver octopus hence silvery color-ways. I thought an octopus might feel at home in bubbling water, textured fabric brings project to life. Without a focal and fringe, collar looks beautifully jewel encrusted but since my inspiration had prominent fringe, I continued on and there really was only one way to go; netting. Bubbly's netting is slightly irregular, resembling items caught in a net. Bubbly fringe is a complex part of project and where students will begin. Bubbly Starfish Bracelet echoes Octopus Collar. A narrow wristband and front cut-out ensure wrist is not constricted. Cut-out adds sophistication, fringe adds rock-n-roll. The overall affect is feminine and manicure-magnifying.

Beetle and the Bee Bracelet

Sunday November 1 9:30am to 4:00pm

Drama Mama!  This cuff is dramatic with or without the Stag Beetle.  The black color and complex bezel command your attention.  I enjoy how a person can be looking at it as an object of beauty only to discover there are bugs on it.  This would be a full day of pretty-ugly beading.

Byzantine Brunette Bracelet

Saturday October 31, 9:30am to 4:00pm

This bracelet started as a visual teaching aide of various sized cuff bands. Interestingly, it evolved quite a bit by the third piece. Alfons Mucha's Byzantine Bronze subconsciously inspired the fringe. Although the piece is high color, it reads as green and brown. There is a soft draping across the hand. The cuff is oversized like most of my bracelets.

Kits must be ordered from the instructor at least 14 days prior to class to ensure receipt before class. Catherine will provide the link for ordering upon receipt of registration. Kit prices are as follows:

Bubbly Set – Kit: $ 124.00

Beetle and the Bee – Kit: $89

Byzantine Brunette– Kit: $89

JUNE CLASSES WITH CINDY HOLSCLAW of BEAD ORIGAMI

Cindy Holsclaw has been teaching her beading designs as a full time artist since 2012. She loves exploring intricate geometric structures, and her work is inspired by science, mathematics, and the natural world. With a background in academia and a doctorate in biochemistry, Cindy takes an analytical approach to her design style; she likes exploring different bead shapes and new beading techniques, and she’s constantly thinking of new ways to put beads together. In 2015, Cindy was names Designer of the Year by Beadwork Magazine, and a series of her beading videos were published by Interweave in the same year. Cindy has taught at the Bead & Button Show as well as at several bead stores, societies, and retreats in the US and in Europe. When not on the road, Cindy makes her home in San Diego, California with her husband and daughter.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the continued need for social distancing, the June 2020 classes with Cindy Holsclaw will be held via Zoom on June 26, 27 and 28.

Zoom has proven a useful medium for meetings of all kinds, including classes. Many bead instructors have moved to this platform in order to continue teaching during this time. Cindy will be teaching via zoom at the San Diego Bead Society prior to our classes in June.

Students will be required to purchase their class kit from Cindy as she will be unable, in this class format, to address issues that may arise from beads that are not quite the same as the ones she has chosen for the projects.

The class fee is less than for an “in-person” class. The class size will be only 12-15 students per class to ensure a good experience for all.

Note: Because of the change in format, we dropped the Highland Garden Necklace from our lineup.
